Wired Game Center, the place to game.
Wired Game Center is a LAN gaming center. A place to get together to
play network games. In this day and age of high-speed internet connections
at home, you might ask why travel to a LAN Center??
The advantages
of gaming at a LAN Gaming Center
There are many
reasons why people come to LANs, some are:
1) FASTER GAMING: Although the Internet, which is a wide-area network,
provides a method for gamers to play against each other on-line, the speed
that the Internet relays information is not nearly as fast as a LAN.
Therefore it is typical that networked game performance suffers when
played over the Internet. Depending on each player's distance from
the computer that is hosting the game, there will be an inequity in the
lag effect of the internet. Some competitors will experience
anywhere from a slight advantage in reaction time to a total disability
caused by lag. To overcome this annoying consequence of on-line
gaming, many people join organized LAN parties to enjoy gaming without the
lag of a wide area network.
2) FAIRER COMPETITION: As gamers become proficient at a certain game,
there is often a compelling interest to find out who is actually the best
at it. Although many competitive tournaments are fought on-line for
this purpose, nothing compares to the environment created by bringing
everyone close together on the same network. At a LAN, there can be
no excuses about who was disadvantaged by network lag, because LAN ping
latency is negligible. In the case of serious competition for money
and prizes, a LAN is therefore really the best way to conduct fair and
standardized competition.
3) COMMUNITY: Whenever a group of gamers get together, like any
fraternity, there is the benefit of being able to share a mutual interest,
learn from each other, and make friends and allies. Most of the
games at a LAN center require at least two people to play so it's a rich
environment to find both teammates and opponents. With all of the
varied experience competing at a LAN, there is plenty of information and
skills to learn from watching and interacting with the better competitors
who attend. Mutual interests usually make for good friendships and
LANs provide an excellent environment for people to interact with and meet
people who share their passion for gaming.
4) ACCOMPLISHMENT/REWARD: Most often LANs will host organized
competitions to see who is the best at certain games. Winning those
competitions, like in any sport, provides people with a sense of pride and
accomplishment. Sometimes there is also prizes or money provided as
a reward for tournament winners and that can both enhance the sense of
accomplishment and also get people's adrenaline going when there's
something important on the line.
5) ESCAPE: LANs
provide an environment with more than just tournament competition.
There are prize drawings and other non-gaming contests. The idea is
to provide an environment where there is fun and excitement for everyone,
novices and experts alike. You can play for hours on end and you can
just surf the net. You can drink caffeine, eat junk food, and stay
up all night. But it’s also a safe and non-threatening environment
and a good time to unplug from life and have fun.
LANs
range in size from a few people gathered in someone's basement to
ultra-huge mega LANs with thousands of people in attendance. Better
organization and corporate backing has helped proliferate these larger
LANs. Additionally, a movement within the LAN community, sometimes
called The E-Sports Movement or The Professional Gaming Movement has
helped as well. This yearning to turn computer gaming competitions
into a mainstream professional sport has been a driving force toward LAN
participation. Most recently, corporate backing has pushed prize purses
for such competitions as high as $100,000-1,000,000.
